Here they are:
1. GET & HOST YOUR DOMAIN
It goes without saying. We have said it before in past articles that choosing the right domain name is essential to defining your brand, giving an inspiring first impression to website visitors and fine-tuning your SEO efforts.
Remember to choose a website domain that is:
Simple and easy to remember
Ends with .com, .net or .org
Next, is to get a hosting package that is professional enough to ensure reliable uptime and standard loading speed. We recommend Bluehost because of its one-click installation feature for Joomla.
2. INSTALL JOOMLA VIA ONE-CLICK INSTALLATION
The first thing you need to do once you have sorted your domain and hosting provider is to go ahead and install Joomla.
This can be a complicated process depending on where your site is hosted.
For example, Bluehost offers one-click install for the CMS. All you need to do is log in to your account, locate the Joomla icon in the control panel, click and follow the instructions.
Things to note during the installation:
Make sure to leave the install any sample data section at none, since the plan is to learn how to build a website with Joomla from scratch.
Also check whether the configuration is satisfactory and if the server environment passes Joomla’s requirements.
If you like what you see, go ahead and click Install and Joomla will set up the CMS on your server.
At this point, you should see a display on your screen:
Joomla installation successful
To get to the control panel or back end of the Joomla site:
Click the blue Administrator button and enter your chosen username and password.
Or you can simply use yourdomain.com/administrator.
3. GET FAMILIAR WITH THE USER INTERFACE
The next step in learning how to build a website with Joomla is getting familiar with the user interface.
On the left of the control panel, there are shortcuts to frequently used parts of the admin area. Parts like creating new articles, changing the menu structure or installing extensions.
4. SELECT A TEMPLATE FOR YOUR SITE
Like various other content management systems, Joomla offers a template-based structure where you can change your site design without coding.
Your next step is to select the right template for your website. Here are a few places you can start.
While selecting a theme make sure to pay attention to key issues like:
Does the template feature any form of technical Support structure?
Do they have frequent updates?
Finally, do they have an archived documentation, Are they customizable and do they feature a responsive cross browser compatibility?
5. INSTALL YOUR JOOMLA TEMPLATE
Installing a Joomla template is relatively easy. You simply upload the zip file under Extension > install
6. CUSTOMIZE THE DESIGN
Most Joomla templates come with some customization options which can be accessed by clicking on the template name in the list.
This allows you to make specific adjustments to things like colors, fonts, logos, sizes and much more.
Some Joomla templates even come with their own settings page where you can do a lot more while previewing the changes in real time.
7. CREATE A NEW PAGE
Creating pages in Joomla is quite simple. Pages are simply called articles.
This is a little confusing but soon gets clearer as you go on. You can create pages/ articles via Content > Articles > Add New Article or you can use the shortcut on the control panel.
8. ASSIGN PAGES TO THE JOOMLA NAVIGATION MENU
For visitors to access your new page you need to assign the page to a menu.
Under Menus, locate the one with the house icon assigned to it. That the one that is currently active.
To assign a new link to it, hover over it and pick Add New Menu Item.
Next, under Menu Item Type, select Article > Single Article. Then, under Select Article you can choose existing content on your site via Select and then click on the title of the one you want to assign.
Now input a Menu Title at the top and make sure the menu to assign it to is selected on the right before you save and close. If you have done it well, the new item should appear.
9. START BLOGGING IN JOOMLA
Yes, Joomla also allows you publish blog posts. You need to first assign your blog posts to a category after creating it.
Content > Categories > Add New Category. It takes you to the same editor as before where you can input a name at the top (e.g. Blog), save and close.
After that, you can assign the category to your menu the same way you did with the page before. Only this time, under Menu Item Type, choose Articles > Category Blog
