Choose the Best Blogging Platform
As a beginner, you’ll want a blogging platform that’s easy to set up, and doesn’t require any coding skills. You’ll also need to think about what kind of blog you want to create, now and in the future.
As your blog grows, you may want to change the look of your site and add more features for your growing audience. That means it’s important to choose a blogging platform that’s flexible, with room to grow. Starting off with the wrong platform can make it very difficult to switch later on.
You can be lost in making decision about which blogging platform you should use, but if you are a beginner, go for WordPress. If you are a small business, go for Joomla and for Organizations, we recommend Drupal. But know that you are free to pick your choice, any will do for you, all you need is the required skill for any of the platform.
Here’s why we recommend WordPress:

Why you shouldn’t create a blog on a free blogging platform

- You don’t control your content – the blogging platform does. They could shut you down anytime, and for any reason. Don’t believe us? Read this. And checkout this also won’t hurt (it has happened before)
- The web address of your blog will be long and hard to remember (like yourfreeblog.blogspot.com) instead of a catchy, branded address you choose.
- No Customization – You can’t use all the free plugins or themes. Heck, you can’t even use custom themes to really make your blog stand out.
- Other Limitations – Free space of only 3GB. For posts, images, and perhaps videos—that’s just not enough.
- You’re not allowed to advertise on most free blogging platforms, making it much harder to ever make money from blogging.
All of these limitations apply to the WordPress.COM blogs. What you really want is to self-host a WordPress blog – it’s the same software without all the limitations!
We advise, start with a self-hosted blog on my own domain from day one. Setting up a blog like this is WAY easier and less expensive than you think.
Choose Your Domain
Domain name – This will be your personal blog address where people can find you over and over again. For example, Yahoo’s Domain is www.Yahoo.com. Your new blog domain name will be www.YourBlogName.com, except you’ll choose what’s going to be behind YourNewBlog. The cost of a domain name is usually $10/year, but if you follow this guide all the way, we’ll show you how to get one for much cheaper.
Your domain name is important because:
- It’s your “first impression” to website visitors.
- It affects your rankings in search engines.
- It defines your brand.
With that in mind, you should put some thought into your domain name, but not toomuch.
Tips for Domain Name
- Choose brandable over generic. A brandable domain name is unique and stands out from the competition, while a generic domain name is usually stuffed with keywords and unmemorable. (For example, www.LisasRocks.com is more brandable than www.RockCollectingBlog.com.)
- Keep it concise. According to research from Gaebler.com, a magazine for entrepreneurs, the top-100 websites have approximately 6 characters in their domain name.
- Easy to type and pronounce. Your domain name should roll off the tips of your fingers and the tips of your tongue without any problem.
Another rule in choosing your domain is simply “Make sure it goes along with your Keyword, Niche, Topic or Theme” Don’t have a domain name outside any of these. Blogging outside these will make you rank lower in SEO, and your visitor will find it difficult to remember your website. If you’re not sure what to blog about, there are a few ways to find a good blog topic:
- Hobbies & passions. Hobbies or other interests you are passionate about are a great place to start. Cooking, travel, fashion, sports, and cars are all classic examples. But even blogs about more obscure hobbies can be successful, since the your audience is literally anyone in the world with the internet.
- Life experiences. Everyone has lessons they have learned through life experience. Sharing this knowledge can be incredibly helpful to others in similar situations. For example, I recently helped a woman start her blog about being a fireman’s wife. She has a lot of experience and knowledge to share with others about this topic, and it has helped her connect with others in similar situations.Think about the things you have experienced in life. This could be related to your family (example: a blog about being a stay at home mom), work (a blog about experiences dealing with clients), or other life experiences (a blog about dealing with a troubling time such as a disease or divorce, or about a happy time such as preparing for a wedding or a birth of a child).
- A personal blog. A personal blog is a blog all about you. This will include a variety of topics, from things you do on a daily basis, to random thoughts and musings. This is a great way to share you thoughts with the world without having to stick to just one topic.
Choose Your Hosting Service
Web hosting – This will be the home of your blog address and content that’s on the blog. Without web hosting, you’ll be unable to use your domain. Think of it as a computer hard drive that stores all your content on your blog (images, blog posts and so on). The cost of web hosting is usually somewhere between $2-5 per month.
When it comes to hosting, there are only two things that matter.
- Page load speed – The average amount of time (in seconds) it takes your blog to load.
- Uptime – 99.9% isn’t enough (it’s 42 minutes of downtime per month). You should be aiming for 100%.

HOW TO SIGN UP WITH INMOTION HOSTING
First, let us walk you through how you sign up with InMotion.
STEP 1. CHOOSE YOUR HOSTING PLAN
VisitInMotion and choose the plan you want to use.
STEP 2. CHOOSE YOUR DOMAIN NAME
Choose if you want to register a domain name with InMotion Hosting, or if you already have a domain name that you want to use.
STEP 3. CONFIGURE YOUR HOSTING PLAN
Choose which data center servers you want to use. Either U.S East Coast (if you’re in Europe choose this) or U.S. West Coast (if you’re in Asia Pacific choose this).
Choose if you want InMotion Hosting to pre-install WordPress (or Joomla, PrestaShop or BoldGrid) for you.
STEP 4. CREATE YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT
Enter your email address and click continue.

Install Your Chosen Blogging Platform (Recommend WordPress)
Installing any of your chosen platform in as easy as anything you can think of. Within few minutes depending on your network or hosting company, it should be less than two (2) minutes. Get any of these, WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal
But for the sake of this we will be using WordPress and we will be using InMotion as our hosting platform.

Log into your InMotion Hosting Account Management Panel (AMP). Under your account name, click on the cPanel button. You will then be redirected and automatically logged into cPanel. Alternatively you can access cPanel through your browser address bar by typing in domainname.com/cpanel (replace domainname.com with your actual domain name).
Login into your cPanel
Go to Software section, then click on the Softaculous icon
Click on the WordPress logo. This will open a screen with several options to show You will see a screen with Install, Overview, Features, and Import. Click on the Install link
Fill in the WordPress set up information. The following is the necessary information you need to fill in the image below:
Here are the software setups you will asked to input:
- Choose protocol. Choose which of the provided protocols your WordPress website should be accessible from. For example I use https://www.websitehostingrating.com
- Choose domain. Select the domain name you want to install WordPress on from the drop box
- Install in directory. Leave this blank to install on the domain directly. If you are installing in a subfolder of your site you type in the folder name. For example, if you type in folder-name then WP will be installed: website.com/folder-name.
- Site name. The name of your WordPress site.
- Site description. The description or “tagline” for your WordPress site.
- Enable multisite (WPMU). Make sure this box is unchecked as you don’t want WPMU (Multiuser) enabled.
- Admin username. Enter a username for your WordPress Dashboard login.
- Admin password. Enter a password for your WordPress Dashboard login.
- Admin email. Enter an email address for your WordPress Dashboard login.
- Select language. Choose what language you would like your WordPress platform installed in. The list of supported languages is quite big and most probably you will find your native language there
- Limit login attempts (Loginizer). Enable this checkbox as you want the “Limit Login Attempts” plugin installed, as it boosts the security on your WordPress website
- Choose a theme to install. Select none unless you want to use a WordPress theme from the dropdown.
- Advanced options. Here you can rename the database name and table prefix, but you can leave the default values as-is.
- Install. Hit the install button and WordPress will begin installing, once done you will be shown the login details (and emailed too to the above email address you nominated)
Select the Domain you want to install your WordPress on from the drop box
Installation directory differs base on what you want. Should you want to install in your homepage, then Leave this blank to install on the domain directly. If you are installing in a subfolder of your site you type the folder name here. This will make the blog load like the following: example.com/foldername.
Note: Installing to Subdomains– If you decide that you wish to install to a subodmain, then you will need to first make sure that you have correctly created the subdomain in cPanel. The main difference is that the path will appear like this: subdomain.main_domain.com instead of like this main_domain.com/subdomain. If the Subdomain is already created, then you will be able to select the subdomain at the Choose Domain stage of the installation. If you are trying to install it to a sub-folder that is not specified as a subdomain, then the Choose domain option should remain as the domain name that you wish to use for the installation. The in-Directory option will be filled with the folder that you wish to use – as per the example above.
Click Install. Softaculous will Check the submitted data and install the files to your server for WordPress. Click Return to Overview.
Visit your website in your browser. You should see a new WordPress install like the snapshot to the right.
Log into your new blog
At this stage, you should now have a blank WordPress site installed, along with your admin access username and password written down somewhere.
Start by typing in your new web address (www.YourNewBlog.com) to see what your WordPress blog looks like.
To login to your WordPress Admin Dashboard and have an interface like the image above, simple type in your URL or web address (i.e your domain name) and make sure you put /wp-admin at the end of the web address. You should have something like this: www.yournewblog.com/wp-admin
Congratulations – you now know how to make a blog using WordPress. You’ve installed WordPress and set up your blog, all on your own! As you can see, it was really easy and straightforward.
Design Your Blog
Once you’re inside WordPress dashboard, you can start customizing your blog. We’ll go through everything you need to do to get your blog ready and your first post published today.
Designing your blog can be as easy as anything you can think of, with the write template or theme, you are good to go. You can even hire us to help you out if you get stuck. But if you want to design yourself, make sure you setup up your blog with all simplicity. But keep reading

If you’ve set up your blog, you’re now ready to start using WordPress and customizing your blog. It’ll be pretty easy and fun at the same time.
Remember: You can log in to your blog by going to www.yourNewblog.com/wp-admin/ and using the credentials you set up with InMotion or any other hosting company you used.
Choose a theme/template
You should get familiar with the look and items of the WordPress admin menu. Here are the various admin menu items:
- Dashboard – This is the page you see right after logging in.
- Posts – Here you can write and publish new blog posts and view and edit old ones. We’ll go through this once we’ve set up the blog otherwise.
- Media – This is your media library with all the images, PDFs, videos, etc. you’ve uploaded.
- Links – Many blogs don’t use this at all. You can skip it for now.
- Pages – Here you can write and publish new pages and view and edit old ones. We’ll look at this after choosing your blog design.
- Comments – Everything related to comments. You can get familiar with this when you’ve published your first post and readers leave the first comments.
- Appearance – Here you can change what your blog looks like. We’ll go through this in detail below.
- Plugins – Here you can add and remove plugins, which add functionality to your blog. We’ll go through this after selecting the theme.
- Users – If you create your content with others, you can add them as users here, so they can edit posts. Otherwise, you can skip this for now.
- Tools – Here are some additional tools you can use for publishing posts. You can skip this for now.
- Settings – Here you can edit your blog’s settings. We’ll look at the essential settings later.
There are tons of theme that you can use in WordPress repository and they are all free. But should you want something perfect with great support, then having a premium theme isn’t a bad either if it fits into your budget. Otherwise, going for a free theme with also help you a lot in reducing cost spent in creating the blog.
Here’s what to look for in a WordPress theme:
- Simplicity: Unclear design makes it difficult for readers to navigate your blog.
- Responsiveness: The theme needs to adjust its layout across different screen sizes and devices. In the highly mobile world we live in, responsiveness is a necessity.
- Speed: Although most themes don’t slow down your blog significantly, it’s still good to test it. To test a theme’s speed, use the Pingdom Website Speed Test, enter the URL of the theme’s demo, and see how long the page takes to load. If the load time is longer than three seconds, you might want to find a different theme (ideally, the load time is below two seconds).
- Ease of customization: It should be easy to customize the theme—otherwise, you’ll struggle every time you want to tweak something. Fortunately, many themes offer plenty of easy customization options.
- SEO readiness: The theme shouldn’t make a huge difference to search engines. But it’s still better to choose a theme that’s designed with SEO in mind. (Look for “SEO Optimized” or “SEO ready” in the theme description.)
- Security: Themes don’t generally create security issues. But it’s anyway good to check some user reviews and comments—and while doing that, check if people have had security problems with the theme.
Keep these factors in mind when choosing a theme. But most importantly, pick something you love and want your readers to see.

It’s part of your branding strategy to make people recognize your voice among the crowds of bloggers out there, which in turns help build a better relationship and trust with your readers. It’s simply your identity.
Adding Posts and Pages
Let’s break down what you’ll see here:
- Title Area: This is where you write the title of your post.
- Content Area: This is where the body text of your post goes. The whole area works just like text editing in Word or Pages. You can also add images and other media to your post by clicking the “Add Media” button.
- Standard Editing Tools: Here are options like bold, italic, lists, paragraphs, and headlines.
- Publishing Tools: This is where you get your post shown to the world; chief among them is the big blue “Publish” button. You can also set a publication date to schedule your post in the future or save the post as a draft for more editing.
- Additional Fine-tuning Tools: Update your blog post and categorize it.
Click “Posts » Add New” (or “Pages » Add New) from the left sidebar.
Configure Your URL
The best form of URL is the canonical form. Make sure you implement it into your website. It will pay off later down the line especially in your SEO and also help your visitors know your websites URL link with little or no effort. Goto Settings →Permalink and click save when you’ve chosen your desired link pattern.

Content is the soul of blogging. Without it, a blog is not a blog and you can’t have readers, users or visitors. Blogging is about giving information to the outside world. Content is not limited to writing alone, Videos and Pictures are also part of content. Even audio can be, no crime is picking the form to pass out your info to your audience. Just focus on making sure you put out something for your audience to see or read. Goto to Post→Add New, and then Click Publish after writing your contents
Set your home page
Most bloggers prefer to display a list of all their written content on their homepage while some just want to display some other customized content on there homepage mostly known as Landing Page.
There are several ways to have a custom landing page as your homepage. But the primary thing that must be done is to first set a basic instruction on the WordPress dashboard. Goto settings → Reading, then click the latest post to set your homepage to have a list of all your latest blogpost displayed and remember to set the total number of post to be 10, to increase page load and make sure it is set to only display summary.
But if you want something else, then click on the static radius button and set the custom homepage and the blog page, click save
Easy navigation menu can not be overlooked, nope, it can’t. So, try creating a Menu item by going to Appearance → Menu. Remember to arrange them in the other you see fit and set appearance position at the bottom of the page, then click save. You can be lost in the midst of tons of plugins, but make sure you do a lot of research to make sure you are installing the best plugin that will not break your site and try installing only the plugin you know you needed. Don’t know how to install plugins in the first place, just simply go to Plugins → Add New and use the search feature to search your desired plugins and click the install button, then click the activate button.
