Now, let’s go to the steps you need to create a blog that has the potential to bring to you a monthly passive income.

Choose the Best Blogging Platform

Best Way to Start a WordPress Blog and Make Money (in 2018)

As a beginner, you’ll want a blogging platform that’s easy to set up, and doesn’t require any coding skills. You’ll also need to think about what kind of blog you want to create, now and in the future.

As your blog grows, you may want to change the look of your site and add more features for your growing audience. This means it is important for you to choose a blogging platform that’s flexible, giving you room to grow. Starting off with the wrong platform can make it very difficult to later switch to another platform.

You can be lost in making decision about which blogging platform you should use, but if you are a beginner, we strongly advice you go for WordPress.  If you are a small business, go for Joomla and for Organizations, we recommend Drupal. Kindly know you are free to pick your choice, any will do for you, all you need is the required skill-set for any of the platform.

Here’s why we recommend WordPress:

  • It’s FREE for everyone to use (including themes, layouts, and add-ons that many other blogging platforms don’t provide).
  • It’s super easy to set up.
  • It’s secure; WordPress is always updating their software and keeping everything sound and secure, there’s rarely a worry of having your blog come under hacking attacks. No wonder Facebook, NASA, and even university blogs are using WordPress.
  • It’s HIGHLY customizable. There are hundreds of free themes and plugins that add more functionality to your blog, from contact form to subscribe boxes to plugins that improve blog performance and much more.

While other blogging platforms are generally all pretty OK, nothing, in our opinion, has ever come close to matching the freedom and customization options that WordPress offers.

Why you shouldn’t create a blog on a free blogging platform

You must never go for any free hosting blogging platform like Blogger, WordPress.com, Weebly etc. If you not sure, read what  has to say on his blog: Don’t Use FREE Blogging Platform to Launch a Blog (If You Want to Be Taken Seriously)

  • You don’t control your content – the blogging platform does. They could shut you down anytime, and for any reason. Don’t believe us? Read this. And checkout this also won’t hurt (it has happened before)
  • The web address of your blog will be long and hard to remember (like yourfreeblog.blogspot.com) instead of a catchy, branded address you choose.
  • No Customization – You can’t use all the free plugins or themes. Heck, you can’t even use custom themes to really make your blog stand out.
  • Other Limitations – Free space of only 3GB. For posts, images, and perhaps videos—that’s just not enough.
  • You’re not allowed to advertise on most free blogging platforms, making it much harder to ever make money from blogging.

What you really want is to self-host a WordPress blog – it’s the same software without all the limitations!

Now, that you have made your decision on which platform to use to power your blog, the next step to take to create a blog is to make a another critical option. Your domain name and web host company are as important more than you can ever imagine. Any mistake you make in this aspect may cost you more than your budget even in terms of energy and time.
A domain name will cost you around $15/year and a web host should be around $8/month. Now if you are just starting out, this may look more than your purse. But to save you some few bucks, we have partnered with InMotion Hosting

Below are the few important InMotion hosting feature and why you should use them

Choose Your Domain

Best Way to Start a WordPress Blog and Make Money (in 2018)

Domain name – This will be your personal blog address where people can find you over and over again. For example, Yahoo’s Domain is www.Yahoo.com. Your new blog domain name will be www.YourBlogName.com, except you’ll choose what’s going to be behind YourNewBlog. The cost of a domain name is usually $10/year, but if you follow this guide all the way, we’ll show you how to get one for free.

Your domain name is important because:

  • It’s your “first impression” to website visitors.
  • It affects your rankings in search engines.
  • It defines your brand.

With that in mind, you should put some thought into your domain name, but not toomuch.

Tips for Domain Name

  • Choose brandable over generic. A brandable domain name is unique and stands out from the competition, while a generic domain name is usually stuffed with keywords and unmemorable. (For example, www.LisasRocks.com is more brandable than www.RockCollectingBlog.com.)
  • Keep it concise. According to research from Gaebler.com, a magazine for entrepreneurs, the top-100 websites have approximately 6 characters in their domain name.
  • Easy to type and pronounce. Your domain name should roll off the tips of your fingers and the tips of your tongue without any problem.

Another rule in choosing your domain is simply “Make sure it goes along with your Keyword, Niche, Topic or Theme” Don’t have a domain name outside any of these. Blogging outside these will make you rank lower in SEO, and your visitor will find it difficult to remember your website. Syed Banki blog about WordPress tutorials, so he made a blog named “WPBeginner.com

If you’re not sure what to blog about, there are a few ways to find a good blog topic:

  • Hobbies & passions. Hobbies or other interests you are passionate about are a great place to start. Cooking, travel, fashion, sports, and cars are all classic examples. But even blogs about more obscure hobbies can be successful, since the your audience is literally anyone in the world with the internet.
  • Life experiences. Everyone has lessons they have learned through life experience. Sharing this knowledge can be incredibly helpful to others in similar situations. For example, I recently helped a woman start her blog about being a fireman’s wife. She has a lot of experience and knowledge to share with others about this topic, and it has helped her connect with others in similar situations.Think about the things you have experienced in life. This could be related to your family (example: a blog about being a stay at home mom), work (a blog about experiences dealing with clients), or other life experiences (a blog about dealing with a troubling time such as a disease or divorce, or about a happy time such as preparing for a wedding or a birth of a child).
  • A personal blog. A personal blog is a blog all about you. This will include a variety of topics, from things you do on a daily basis, to random thoughts and musings. This is a great way to share you thoughts with the world without having to stick to just one topic.

Just as the previous example given above, you can make your domain for Asian Food to be www.asianrecipes.com or www.asiandelicasy.com

Choose Your Hosting Service

Best Way to Start a WordPress Blog and Make Money (in 2018)

Web hosting – This will be the home of your blog address and the content that’s on the blog. Without a web host, you’ll be unable to use your domain. Think of it as a computer hard drive that stores all your content on your blog (images, blog posts and so on). The cost of web hosting is usually somewhere between $2-5 per month.

When it comes to hosting, there are only two things that matter.

  • Page load speed – The average amount of time (in seconds) it takes your blog to load.
  • Uptime – 99.9% isn’t enough (it’s 42 minutes of downtime per month). You should be aiming for 100%.

There Are Good & Bad Hosting Companies

Choosing your host is one of the most important aspect of creating your blog.

Bad web hosts cause most of the issues people have related to their blog. For example, unhelpful customer service and hidden fees are quite common…

Many cheap hosts also overuse servers to cut their costs—and that leads to your site potentially not working just because many people are visiting some other site. There are lots of web hosts out there,  over promising and under delivering.

You need to create an account with a web hosting company and in compensation, you pay them some bucks. As a starter, shared hosting is enough for you except you are creating a website for big companies having a lot of media files with heavy traffic. Shared hosting is the cheapest you can see out there. The best web hosting companies that will gives you all that you need even with the cheapest price you can’t beat are: HostGator, InMotion, Bluehost etc. But for the sake of this post, we will be using InMotion as our web hosting platform.

You should get familiar with the look and items of the WordPress admin menu. Here are the various admin menu items:

  • Dashboard – This is the page you see right after logging in.
  • Posts – Here you can write and publish new blog posts and view and edit old ones. We’ll go through this once we’ve set up the blog otherwise.
  • Media – This is your media library with all the images, PDFs, videos, etc. you’ve uploaded.
  • Links – Many blogs don’t use this at all. You can skip it for now.
  • Pages – Here you can write and publish new pages and view and edit old ones. We’ll look at this after choosing your blog design.
  • Comments – Everything related to comments. You can get familiar with this when you’ve published your first post and readers leave the first comments.
  • Appearance – Here you can change what your blog looks like. We’ll go through this in detail below.
  • Plugins – Here you can add and remove plugins, which add functionality to your blog. We’ll go through this after selecting the theme.
  • Users – If you create your content with others, you can add them as users here, so they can edit posts. Otherwise, you can skip this for now.
  • Tools – Here are some additional tools you can use for publishing posts. You can skip this for now.
  • Settings – Here you can edit your blog’s settings. We’ll look at the essential settings later.

There are tons of theme that you can use in WordPress repository and they are all free. But should you want something perfect with great support, then having a premium theme isn’t a bad either if it fits into your budget. Otherwise, going for a free theme with also help you a lot in reducing cost spent in creating the blog.

Here’s what to look for in a WordPress theme:

  • Simplicity: Unclear design makes it difficult for readers to navigate your blog.
  • Responsiveness: The theme needs to adjust its layout across different screen sizes and devices. In the highly mobile world we live in, responsiveness is a necessity.
  • Speed: Although most themes don’t slow down your blog significantly, it’s still good to test it. To test a theme’s speed, use the Pingdom Website Speed Test, enter the URL of the theme’s demo, and see how long the page takes to load. If the load time is longer than three seconds, you might want to find a different theme (ideally, the load time is below two seconds).
  • Ease of customization: It should be easy to customize the theme—otherwise, you’ll struggle every time you want to tweak something. Fortunately, many themes offer plenty of easy customization options.
  • SEO readiness: The theme shouldn’t make a huge difference to search engines. But it’s still better to choose a theme that’s designed with SEO in mind. (Look for “SEO Optimized” or “SEO ready” in the theme description.)
  • Security: Themes don’t generally create security issues. But it’s anyway good to check some user reviews and comments—and while doing that, check if people have had security problems with the theme.

Keep these factors in mind when choosing a theme. But most importantly, pick something you love and want your readers to see.

You can read more on how to install a theme in WordPress. To install a theme, simply go to Appearance Add New, then search through archive of the WordPress repository for your desired plugin. You can a read a well detailed post on how to install a theme here

Hack Quora for passive referral traffic

Quora threads rank for thousands of search queries AND get tons of organic traffic every month. How can you use Quora to promote your content? Well, people say post comments on Quora…

BUT… Not all Quora threads are created equal. In fact, some have absolutely ZERO traffic going to them…even the seemingly popular ones. Here’s a quick hack to find the best ones:

Go to SEMRush, enter Quora.com, then go to the “Positions” report under “Organic Research”. This will show a list of every keyword that Quora ranks for: BUT…most of these won’t be related to your business at all. SEMRush also shows threads ranking anywhere in the top 100 by default.

This is no use.

Luckily, SEMRush has a super powerful filter built-in. You can use this to filter for threads related only to certain keywords + ranking in the top 5. Hit “Apply”. The result? A list of threads that that receive a TON of organic traffic and thus, have the potential to send a lot of referral traffic your way. Pick the 5-10 threads most suited to the article you’re trying to promote, then place thoughtful comments on them with a link back to your new article

Monetize with CPC or CPM Ads

One of the most common ways bloggers make money is through placing ads on their site. There are two popular types of ads:

  • CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your content or sidebar. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, you are paid for that click.
  • CPM Ads: CPM Ads, or “cost per 1,000 impressions,” are ads that pay you a fixed amount of money based on how many people view your ad.

Perhaps the most popular network for placing these types of ads is Google AdSense. With this program, you do not need to be in direct contact with advertisers; you simply place the banner on your site, Google chooses ads relevant to your content, and your viewers click on the ads. There are countless similar programs available if you find that AdSense doesn’t work for you, such as Chitika, Infolinks, and Media.net.

Include Affiliate Links in Your Content

Affiliate marketing is also another great tool for monetizing your blog. Here is how affiliate marketing works:

  1. An advertiser has a product she wants to sell. She agrees to give you a commission from each sale if the buyer is coming from your site.
  2. She gives you a unique link that tracks your affiliate code. That way, she knows when a buyer used your link to make a purchase.
  3. You include your affiliate link on your site. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what she purchased.

Sell Digital Products

If you would rather not advertise other people’s products on your site, or if you are looking for another stream of income, consider selling digital products. This can include items like:

  • eBooks
  • Online courses/workshops
  • Images, video, or music people can use in their own content
  • Apps, plugins, or themes

Sell Private Ads

Working with advertising networks isn’t your only option when it comes to selling ads. If you end up with enough traffic, advertisers may come directly to you and ask you to place their ad on your site. You can also contact advertisers yourself. The biggest difference from the above-mentioned option is that there is no middleman, which means you can set your own ad rates.

Selling private ads can come in the form of banners, buttons, or links. You can even make money writing sponsored posts where you write about or give a review of an advertiser’s product or service. Another option is to write an underwritten post or series, which is where you can write about any topic, but the advertiser pays for a “Brought to you by” mention in the content.

Every great blog has more to what you just see out there. The list can be endless, so we will like you to give your thought about this writeup.
